The massive China Food & Drinks Fair a.k.a. Tang Jiu Hui is under way in Chengdu. Some 30,000 trade people are expected to wheel and deal during the half of the event, from March 20 to March 23, as the Kempinski and Shangri-La hotels hold the International Wine & Spirits Show, a program that has evolved out of the intense business meetings traditionally held ahead of the fair proper. That fair will draw an estimated 200,000 to 300,000 trade people and consumers to the Chengdu International Conference and Exhibition Center from March 24 to March 26.

If you plan to go and haven’t booked accommodations, good luck, as rooms are not only scarce but also, when available, prohibitively expensive. But for those going, it’s a chance not only to interact with potential partners but also to take the temperature of the industry and its players, and to enjoy some of the spicy food for which Chengdu is known. Finally, here’s a chart that gives a general breakdown of the events at each hotel and the exhibition center, including a frank list of the advantages and disadvantages of each.
