London-based Decanter, known for its annual World Wine Awards, announced today that it will hold a sibling competition this year called the Asia Wine Awards. The competition will be launched on May 29 at Vinexpo Asia-Pacific and co-chaired by Stephen Spurrier and Jeannie Cho Lee, both of whom have editorial positions with Decanter. The judging will be done in Hong Kong in September.
According to Decanter, each wine will be tasted “blind“, “judged within its region of origin so that an expression of terroir is taken into account” and “assessed within price brackets to ensure wines are compared like for like” (my highlights). It further states that top performers — those receiving gold medals, regional trophies and international trophies — will go through as many as four tastings. More from that press release;
Decanter, the organiser of the world’s most prestigious and largest wine competition, the Decanter World Wine Awards, is launching a new wine competition in Asia. A sister competition to the Decanter World Wine Awards, the Decanter Asia Wine Awards will recognise wines targeted at the Asian market and will be judged by Asia’s most prominent wine experts.
The Asian wine market has grown dramatically in recent years, with Chinese consumption reaching 156.19 million cases in 2011, putting China in 5th place of the top 5 wine-consuming nations worldwide, ahead of UK*.
Open to wines from around the world, the Decanter Asia Wine Awards will be co-chaired by Jeannie Cho Lee MW, the first Asian Master of Wine and a Contributing Editor to Decanter, and Steven Spurrier, who is the Chairman of the Decanter World Wine Awards and Decanter’s Consultant Editor. The competition will be launched at Vinexpo Asia-Pacific, the premier wine trade event for Asia and will open for entries on 29th May 2012. Judging will take place place in Hong Kong in September 2012.
I will have very short interview with Sarah Kemp, publishing director of Decanter, up soon.
