By Jim Boyce | The Austrian Wine Marketing Board (AWMB) has appointed Michael Zimmerman as department head for Markets East, a portfolio that includes China. Zimmermann previously worked in marketing and distribution for Weszeli Estate in the Kamptal region.
While Austria has a small slice of China’s market, AWMB has steadily developed ties with key trade people over the years under the leadership of managing director Willi Klinger, most notably via well-organized tours of Austria’s wine regions.
One of the bigger importers / distributors in China is Wine Republic, which carries labels from four Austrian producers. That includes Gruner Veltliner from Nigl, Gruner Veltliner and Pinot Noir from Weininger, Gruner Veltliner, Pinot Noir, Riesling and Muscat from Loimer, and tasty reds from Heinrich, including Salzberg, a blend of Merlot, Blaufrankisch and Zweigelt. Wine Republic also represents Austrian glassware company Zalto.
