By Jim Boyce | Hansen wines from Inner Mongolia are now being handled in Beijing by importer and retailer La Cava. The wines, made by veteran French winemaker Bruno Paumard, were previously distributed by China Wines & Spirits.
Five wines are stocked in La Cava, including Semillion-Riesling made with grapes from Gansu province, which borders on Inner Mongolia, and Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon that uses fruit from Ningxia, another neighbor. The others are a Cabernet Gernischt that uses grapes grown near Hansen’s base, and that has done well in some of my tastings, and the “Red Camel” Cabernet Sauvignon that carries a hefty price tag of rmb1500. The other wines retail for rmb120 to rmb150.
The shop will continue to carry Xinjiang wines made by 1421. Those options include two entry-level and two premium-level wines, starting from rmb108, as well as a ‘Special Reserve’ Cabernet Sauvignon.
